Memorial dedicated to the Fallen
20 February 2013
The concept of having a Regimental memorial to commemorate and give due respect to those who passed away while serving with 1 Regiment of the Armed Forces of Malta had been in the pipeline for several years. Following insistence from a number of Unit personnel and various meetings with all stakeholders, Commanding Officer, Lt Col Mario Borg, agreed to the proposed plans and the project got under way in October 2012. Acting Regimental Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer (WO) 1 Brian Gatt, prepared the spade work for the realisation of the project and when selected for deployment on the EU Training Mission Somalia, he handed over to his counterpart WOI John Grixti who days later concluded his tour of duty on the same mission. WO1 Grixti finalised the necessary planning and preparation and the actual project got underway. A private company was sub-contracted to carry out the works. The main feature of the memorial is the hard stone block imported all the way from Syria and crafted by local master craftsman George Spiteri. Once the stone was placed, the area around the memorial was embellished by SSgt Catania, SSgt Kitcher and SSgt Vella assisted by other soldiers within the Regiment.
The Memorial is dedicated to Members of the 1 Regiment who passed away whilst performing their tour of duty. 1 Regt shall always remember and be grateful for the loyal and dedicated service of:
Civilian Mr Seguna M - 12 Jun 1993
