WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENLISTMENT IN THE AFM?

A person applying for enlistment with the AFM must satisfy the following:

  • Be physically fit according to military standards
  • Be 18 years of age but not over 25 years and in the case of Officer Cadets not over 23 years, or not over 25 years if in possession of a university degree.
  • Be a Maltese citizen
  • Possess a clean Police conduct
  • Have a minimum height as specified in call for applications
  • Have a secondary level of education to enrol as Gunner
  • Be in possession of an A-level pass in at least 2 subjects and an O-level pass in 6 other subjects to enrol as Officer Cadet, or completed the course leading to certification as Officer-in-Charge of a Navigational Watch, or the course leading to certification as an Officer-in-Charge of an Engineering Watch at the MCAST Maritime Institute.
  • Have the inclination and motivation necessary for military life.

 

WHAT WILL I GAIN BY JOINING THE AFM?

A person enlisting in the AFM will benefit from the following:

  • The basic starting pay of a Gunner is Eu 10,373 rising to Eu 11,617 in 4 years
  • A commission as an Officer gets you the starting salary of Eu 13,182, increasing according to rank reached
  • A special monthly allowance of Eu 21.50 every 4 weeks, and other allowances for specialist services
  • An annual trade allowance for soldiers working in particular trades, varying between Eu 274.87 and Eu 552.06
  • Double rate of pay on Sundays
  • Free military clothing and equipment
  • Free medical care and medicines
  • Full pension upon completion of 25 years service.

WHAT ARE THE HOURS OF WORK?

Most of the sections work on a day roster, that is, Monday to Friday from 0700 hrs to 1600 hrs (Half days in Summer). Some other sections work on a 12hr-shift roster on a Day – Night – Rest – Off basis.

WHAT IS THE ANNUAL LEAVE ENTITLEMENT?

All personnel are presently entitled to 223 hours of vacation leave.

WHAT ABOUT SICK LEAVE?

All personnel may benefit from 28 days sick-leave which may be extended upon application, according to each particular case.

WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF A SOLDIER?

All soldiers perform armed guard duties, ceremonial parades, drill training and weapon handling skills. Other duties include clerical work, driving of Army vehicles, maintenance and repair work on military equipment, flying and sea-going duties on AFM craft and various personal security assignments.

HOW OFTEN ARE CALLS FOR APPLICATION ISSUED?

There is at least one call for applications annually. This is published in the Malta Government Gazzette and advertised in all the local newspapers.
